What matters in a tutor

A strong tutor needs more than subject knowledge.

Brilliant Maths was built around practical teaching: understand the learner, make the method visible, and keep adjusting until the next step starts to make sense.

Clarity before speed

A learner who is confused does not need the same explanation delivered faster. The tutor should be able to break a method into smaller, visible steps.

Patience with the real gap

Sometimes the problem sits several chapters behind the current classwork. Useful tutoring goes back far enough to repair the missing foundation.

Watch, don't just lecture

The learner's hesitation, working and mistakes are useful information. A tutor should notice them and change the explanation when needed.

Build independence

The aim is not to create a learner who can only work when the tutor is present. Explanations and practice should move toward more confident independent work.

Founder-led beginnings

The teaching approach grew before the team did.

Brilliant Maths began with founder Amien Mohamed tutoring four learners in a small group in Cape Town. As the service expanded across more grades, subjects and tutoring formats, the core teaching principle stayed simple: find the learner's actual starting point and build forward from there.

That is the useful standard for a growing tutor network too. More capacity should make support easier to reach without turning tutoring into an anonymous hand-off.

Different learners need different support

The tutor should respond to the problem — not just deliver a worksheet.

A session can look very different depending on why the learner is stuck. These are different tutoring jobs, even when the school subject is the same.

Can I request a specific tutor?

You can tell Brilliant Maths what you are looking for, but the useful match also depends on subject, grade, format, location and current availability. A specific tutor should not be promised before those details are checked.

Will Amien Mohamed personally teach my child?

Brilliant Maths is founder-led, but individual teaching availability can change. If you specifically want founder-led tutoring, mention that in the enquiry so current availability can be confirmed.

Do you have tutors for every grade and subject?

The current service scope includes Mathematics across Grades 1–12, with Mathematical Literacy and Physical Sciences support at high-school level. Tutor availability within that scope is confirmed when you enquire.

What if the learner and tutor are not a good fit?

Raise the concern. The useful next step is to understand what is not working — teaching style, pace, subject fit, format or something else — and reconsider the tutoring route from there.
