How support starts
Before adding more work, find the missing step.
A learner can look “behind” for very different reasons. Sometimes the current chapter is the problem. Sometimes the real gap sits months or years earlier. Tutoring is more useful when that distinction is made first.
Describe where they are stuck- 1Locate the point of difficulty
Start with what the learner is being asked to do and where the process stops making sense.
- 2Check the foundation underneath it
Work backwards only as far as needed to identify the missing concept, skill or method.
- 3Explain one clear route through it
Use worked examples and plain language before expecting independent practice.
- 4Practise until the method becomes usable
The learner should leave with something they can repeat, not just a page of copied answers.

Support changes as the learner moves through school.
Primary Mathematics is not taught the same way as senior high-school work. The subject may keep the same name, but the type of support a learner needs changes with the level and the problem in front of them.
